Do you sense that we are caught up in events that are beyond our ability to understand or control? Climate change, political polarization, global tensions, the war between Ukraine and Russia, the coup in Niger, famine, drought, the carnage from a wild fire in Maui, what kind of energy is clean, which ones are dirty, distribution of wealth, the list could go on and no doubt will.
Feeling bad about these things is a waste of time for it leads to despair and paralysis. Thinking about these things isn’t really productive, either. Debating them seems to generate only outrage. Perhaps the place to start is the admitting that the beginning of wisdom, according to Socrates, is to know that we know nothing and then begin to examine what is true rather than a matter of opinion.
It would be progress if we could agree on what the problem is. We tend to jump on bandwagons that promise a cure before we ever ask what is the problem. Hold off with the prognosis, dear prognosticators. A walk toward the problem is indicated. Walking together through the issues would be a good start.
For the moment, it looks like we’re dozing, tossed to and fro by waking nightmares.
Perhaps we can sleep on it. A good night’s sleep is a good start.
Be well.
