In Summer, we change our routine and visit congregations where we are not a member, to see how some of our other neighbors are getting on. May I suggest that you do likewise. It’s important that you do this in these days when so much of our world view is shaped by social media. It’s a good way to be social.
I mention this because I’ve noticed in my feed of podcasts and social media sites, as well as what now is called legacy media, the voices have become shrill. In another instance, folks were talking about other traditions different from their own, asking questions that would be better asked if someone from that other tradition were in the podcast answering their questions.
It’s way too easy to fall into the trap of assuming what others are like. From our excursions we have found that we have a lot in common. It’s important to experience that face to face.
When I was serving a congregation in California, we had the distinction of actually sharing a lot with a mosque. I remember the day when I walked next door, took off my shoes and found a place to sit (on the floor) and listen, and watch, and pray. The Imam was preaching on repentance. Afterwards, back in my office, I composed an email.
In that introductory email, I wrote that my tradition, Martin Luther’s first line that gained international attention was “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, ``Repent'' (Mt 4:17), he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.”1 I wrote that I heard an echo of that in his sermon.
That led to a dialogue over the next year that I still hold close to my heart. We learned so much from each other. Our congregations even worked on projects together, including how to be a Red Cross shelter. I shed real tears when it came time for me to leave that place where we shared a piece of real estate.
We all share a lot, namely this blue and white marble revolving around a good sized yellow star. Start these conversations, and keep them going.
Be well, dear readers.

That is okay. Your choice. Please do not sit on the couch this time . These are important elections, from now on, even unto the election for POTUS.
I believe there were too many couch potatoes, during 2024 elections. I would venture to guess 60 to 70 percent, most people were tired from one reason or another.
